Bon iconography has both unique features and features shared with Buddhism, and differentiating a Bon painting from a Buddhist composition requires some knowledge of the specialist symbols not shared by each. The use of indigenous animals and the shape of hats can also be important. However complex an iconographic figure may be, there are really only a small number of symbols to learn and identify.
