REPORT ON EVENTS AT THE BARBIER-MUELLER MUSEUM IN GENEVA

To mark the launch of its latest two books, “The Chepang of Nepal” and "Menuka and the Spirits of the Night”, the Barbier-Mueller Museum Cultural Foundation, with the support of the watch manufacturer F. P. Journe, organised a series of significant events.

On 21 November, at the Théâtre Les Salons, anthropologist Adrien Viel presented his book

LES CHEPANG DU NEPAL

accompanied by two representatives of the community studied, Biswash Chepang and Dil Chepang, who came specially from Nepal for the occasion. To round off the evening, two Chepang dhyangro, generously donated by the Le Toit du Monde gallery, were auctioned off, raising the sum of €11,000. These funds will be dedicated to the creation of a school among the Chepang people, thus perpetuating the initiative to preserve their language and, by extension, their culture. This objective reflects the original vision of Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller when he created the foundation.

The following day, the museum hosted a lecture on Nepalese shamanism by François Pannier and another on Chepang shamanism by Adrien Viel, followed by the screening of the film “Mithila” directed by Ludovic Segarra. The day ended with a guided tour led by François Pannier of an exhibition installed in one of the museum's rooms entitled.

Trésors cachés de l'Asie du Sud - Himalaya

The works on display, carefully selected by Laurence Mattet in collaboration with François Pannier, were all acquired by the late Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller, an aesthetic collector. The “hidden treasures” on display in this room do not conform to any specific historical or cultural categorisation, but simply reflect this collector's insatiable taste for art in all its forms.

An exhibition of photographs by Adrien Viel, entitled

Regards sur les Chepang

has also been installed. It's a window onto the fascinating world of this little-known community. Through the eyes of Adrien Viel, this presentation offers an authentic and captivating insight into the daily life of the Chepang.

As part of the Barbier-Mueller Museum Cultural Foundation's educational mission, a series of meetings with schoolchildren and students has been organised, encouraging enriching exchanges between this young audience and the members of the Chepang community present.

Portrait François BoulangerDeath of François Boulanger

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of François Boulanger on 22 September.

He has a passion for musical instruments and has acquired a large collection of sanza, which he exhibited at BRUNEAF in 2011.

This remarkable collection, built up over 40 years of passionate research shared by his wife Françoise Bouhière, has been donated to the Musée de la Musique in Paris and the MIM - Musée des instruments de musique in Brussels.

Another important facet of his collection was made up of musical instruments from northern India, mainly Santal.

Most of the work was sarangi, and was exhibited at Le Toit du Monde gallery in September 2022.

A catalogue was published to mark the occasion.

He was a passionate and exciting man who leaves a great void in the world of collectors.
